The Hollywood Reporter announced yesterday that Castle Rock producer J.J. Abrams has signed on to produce a spin off series of Stephen King's 1977 novel and Stanley Kubrick's 1980 feature film, The Shining, titled Overlook. The series will air on WarnerMedia's forthcoming streaming service.
Set for 10 episodes, the series will be written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown, both of whom previously worked on Castle Rock. A mini 'writer's room' has been opened to allow them to get a head start on the series' scripts during the current production shutdown.
WarnerMedia first attempted to break into The Shining universe back in 2014 when they began developing Overlook Hotel. It was described as a prequel to the original film but unfortunately never moved past the development stage.
Based on Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's 1980 feature film of the same name has since become a cult classic. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, The Shining chronicles a small family's descent into madness and insanity as they are overwhelmed by isolation after father Jack Torrance takes a job as the winter caretaker for the infamous Overlook Hotel.
